1. What This Tool Does

This drainage risk map helps lawn care crews decide where it's safe to work today and where to postpone. It combines permanent terrain/soil data with live weather conditions to produce a risk score for every grid cell across Metro Detroit.

Live View — Real-time risk (0–100) combining static terrain with current weather, soil moisture, and forecast
Static Risk View — Permanent terrain & soil risk (0–10) independent of weather; use the rainfall slider to simulate scenarios
Soil Groups View — USDA Hydrologic Soil Groups (A–D) showing inherent drainage capacity

2. Static Risk Layer (Terrain + Soil)

The base layer scores every location on five permanent factors that never change with weather.

Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) — Measures where water naturally accumulates. Higher TWI = wetter, flatter collection zones.

Hydrologic Soil Group (HSG) — USDA classification. Group A (sandy) drains in hours; Group D (heavy clay) holds water for days.

Slope — Steeper slopes shed water faster. Flat areas (<1°) pond and score higher risk.

10%

Flow Accumulation — How much uphill area drains through this cell.

Drainage Class — USDA overall assessment from "Excessively Drained" to "Very Poorly Drained".

When weather data is available, the Live view combines static terrain risk with four dynamic weather components using IDW interpolation from 6 weather stations.

6. Using This for Daily Scheduling

0–30	Low — All operations permitted. Ideal conditions.
31–50	Moderate — Normal ops OK. Avoid concentrated traffic on clay areas.
51–65	High — Light equipment only. No aeration. Postpone if possible.
66–80	Very High — Emergency service only. High rut/compaction risk.
81–100	Extreme — POSTPONE ALL. Standing water likely.
